A short walk from Geysir's hot springs, we stumbled upon a small farm with several Icelandic horses. The Icelandic horse is unique to the island -- a short, stocky workhorse brought over by the Vikings. Like their diminutive distant cousins, Shetland ponies, Icelandic horses are smaller than continental breeds due to the confined nature of island life. Originally a larger breed, the Icelandic pony evolved to its current size during the centuries of isolation on the island.
