Since Indian Independence, the West Bengal capital of Calcutta has developed an unfortunate reputation as the city of despair. To locals, though, Calcutta remains the City of Joy - a vibrant metropolis, the intellectual and cultural capital of India. I found Calcutta to be friendly and relaxed, despite its poverty and overpopulation problems. Here, I photographed an intersection not far from the Kalighat temple. Mother Theresa's Home for the Dying and Destitute can be seen in the background.
