The Computer as Learning Partner:
Integrated Science Education in Middle Schools

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE between heat and temperature? Did you know there was a difference? You probably were taught this and other science facts in middle school, but rote memorization was not enough for you to understand it, retain it and utilize that knowledge today. To tackle the complexities and inefficiencies of science teaching, the National Science Foundation has funded the Computer as Learning Partner Project (CLP). Directed by Dr. Marcia Linn of Berkeley's Graduate School of Education, CLP attempts to forge a conceptual understanding of science through the use of computer assisted instruction. Now in its tenth year, CLP is a full-fledged physical science curricular course at Foothill Middle School in Walnut Creek, CA.
