Rosewood's most ambitious project to date began at the start of the 1994-1995 school year. Students have been exploring the events surrounding the sinking of the SS Central America, a gold-laden steamship off the Carolina coast in 1857 They will study the scientific aspects of the sinking (hurricanes and weather conditions, local marine life), its historical context (pre-Civil War America, the California gold trade) and its literary context (19th century sea stories, crew and passenger records) With the Internet, students will collect and exchange information with each other and with volunteer experts, including those involved with the actual salvaging of the ship.
