DTV Obstacles and Limitations
Like any technology, DTV is no panacea. Some issues to consider:
- Cost: HDTV prices will remain high until more people find a reason to buy them. DTV tuner cards are around $100 but they currently require a 400 mHZ computer. Standalone DTV set-top boxes ($150) may still be too high for the people who need it most.
- Content Availability: Some producers may avoid DTV until there's a solid market, though PBS plans to push the content envelope
- One-way distribution: DTV is unidirectional; broadcasters may
transmit content through DTV spectrum, but the general public can't.
