A lone soldier patrols the ruined medieval Armenian city of Ani, September 1999. Once the largest city between Constantinople and Baghdad, Ani was a major trade center along the Silk Road. Today it's a untouristed archeological marvel because of its unfortunate location in a no man's land along the Turkish-Armenian border. For the time being you can only visit it from the Turkish side because of continuing political tensions between the two countries.
