A Night at the Tropicana

The night before my 30th birthday, Susanne and I decided to spend the evening at Havana's legendary Tropicana nightclub. Back in the 1940s, when Las Vegas was just a twinkle in Bugsy Segal's eye, the Tropicana was the showgirl extravaganza -- an evening of scantily clad Habaneras dancing almost acrobatically to the best Cuban big band around. We didn't go to the Tropicana with the highest expectations -- perhaps a semi-entertaining kitschy flashback to a bygone era. To our complete surprise, the Copacabana turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Cuba. A cast of nearly 200 dancers, singers and musicians rocked the aging outdoor ampitheatre, showing off a level of talent that Vegas could only dream of....
