The Children of Laos: Luang Prabang

The Children of Laos:
Luang Prabang
s
Before the communist takeover of 1975, Luang Prabang was the home of the royal family of Laos. Though the monarchy is gone, Luang Prabang remains a proud, yet quiet city. And with less than 20,000 residents, it was easily to get to know many of the local children.

Above Picture: These two boys were goofing around inside the grounds of Wat Saen. As soon as we saw them, they started to point at us and laugh hysterically. Andy suggested they were calling us "Poo Head" or some other naughty-yet-innocent name. As Susanne got ready to take this picture, Andy got behind her and started to jump around like an idiot. They seemed to enjoy it.

Listen to the children of Luang Prabang! This RealAudio file is a recording of Lao kids singing in a playground.

s These four kids were horsing around not too far from a venerable stone monument commonly known as That Makmo - the Watermelon Stupa.

If walking is too slow for you, bicycles are probably the best way to get around Luang Prabang. s

s This girl was on her way to school, behind Wat Tao Hai.

Lao girl. Her parent's home sat along the main drag through town, so we bumped into her and her friends a lot. s

s Two sisters. These two lived about a block away from the girl in the above picture.

Spacy Funnybear. This kid was playing with friends inside Wat Xieng Thong. I wonder if he knew what it said on his shirt and hat. s

s Boy looking from his window. Luang Prabang's colonial legacy has left a colorful imprint on the city's architecture.
